The May Day from Flos is a creation by Konstantin Grcic. The Munich-based designer is one of the sought-after object designers of the past years. The pieces by the Munich-by-choice designer are considered as radical and unclassifiable – which can be easily seen when taking a look at the Flos May Day. In 2008, Grcic was selected as the “greatest living designer”. Not without reason do we find numerous of his creations in internationally renowned museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the New York MoMA or the Munich design museum Die Neue Sammlung. For the creation of this pendant light he was awarded the renowned Compasso d'Oro-ADI. Moreover, this pendant light also impresses by its high-quality workmanship. It is made of solid polycarbonate and therefore easily copes with any shocks.

May Day: pendant lights with a flexible place of action
Just like the eponymous distress signal, the Flos May Day also saves every situation. The pendant light with a cable winder can be optionally used as a wall light, a ceiling light, a floor light or a table lamp, as required. The “installation” is literally negligible: in order to suspend this mobile light source from Flos you only need a hook on the wall or the ceiling. For use as a floor light or a table lamp the May Day does not need any fixture at all. The all-rounder is simply put on the floor or the table. It is recommended to equip this light with a halogen light bulb which are known for a brilliant colour rendering.

The May Day light is just brilliantly designed and is probably the Swiss army knife among the light fixtures. At my parents, we simply hang it onto a branch and thereby easily illuminate the barbecue in twilight. When it turns completely dark later on, we place it on our terrace to be able to talk to our friends till late at night. In the dark months this light serves as an additional light in the hallway. When I moved into my new apartment I “borrowed” my parents’ May Day to have some light on my first evening in the apartment. Subsequently, it was integrated into my interior thanks to its plain design ….. However, when my parents claimed that they wanted “their” light fixture back I was given my own May Day for Christmas! I am simply thrilled by its flexibility!
You can place it on something, lay it down or suspend it. You can either suspend it using the large black hook or attach it to the wall via the recess in the shade using a pin/hook. Perfect!
I would describe the light emitted through the shade of the May Day as soft. Thus, you are not dazzled, it is pleasant. The cable is approx. 5 m long and thus long enough that you almost never require an extension cable. That’s very practical. However, you can also completely wind the cable around the handle so that it does not unnecessarily lie around. The housing is made from plastic, it has a clean and robust finish. Since plastic was used the light fixture has a very low weight so that you are able to suspend it anywhere without worry. My advice: using an LED lamp allows you to significantly increase the light intensity without producing too much heat. I use an LED lamp with 1,000 lumens and 12 watts. The price seems to be quite high for a plastic lamp but it is unbelievably versatile. Being and engineer, I am always happy to see the sophisticated design. I think that each household should have one of these lamps. It will surely be used very often. Pendant lights always ready for use
The Flos May Day turns out to be a lighting solution that practically has no limits in terms of the application – a lighting object that is always at hand when you need to bring light into the darkness. Thanks to the five metre long supply line, the all-round May Day light is quickly ready for use in any place and any situation: whether it is suspended on the wall or the ceiling, standing on the floor, lying next to the bed or in the children’s room.
