Artemide Tizio - then as now an exceptional desk and reading lamp
Originally, Tizio - today a design icon - was intended for personal use: Richard Sapper wanted to develop a space-saving desk lamp that would only illuminate the work surface. Thus Tizio was born - at the time a revolutionary luminaire using halogen technology, which until then had mainly been used in car headlights. The halogen light source allowed for a minimalist design. Sapper used the arms as electrical conductors to avoid complex wiring.
With its small luminaire head, delicate arms, and finely balanced counterweights, Tizio provides flexibly directable zone light and is ideal as a desk luminaire. Although the iconic design has remained unchanged after all these decades, there are now several table and floor lamps in different sizes, as well as a modern LED version.
The Artemide Tizio desk lamp is one of the best-selling lamps ever produced. It is part of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York, among others. For its design, Richard Sapper received the coveted Compasso d'Oro.

Richard Sapper - a creative all-rounder with innovative ideas
The German industrial designer Richard Sapper (1932 - 2015) is considered one of the most successful designers of his time. Even his subjects of study - philosophy, anatomy, graphic design and engineering - show how diversely interested the artist was. Born in Munich, he eventually graduated in business administration before working in the design department of Mercedes Benz. He later settled in Milan, where he created a wide variety of objects.
Sapper liked variety, which is why he was active in many product sectors. In addition to lamps, he designed laptops and rearview mirrors, for example, as well as espresso machines and watches. Characteristic of his objects are minimalist yet exciting designs, for which he won many awards. In 2014, he was awarded the Compasso d'Oro for his life's work.

What is the difference between the Tizio 35 and the Tizio 50?
The Tizio 50 and the Tizio 35 differ from each other in two essential aspects. First, the Tizio 50 is larger than the Tizio 35, and second, there are different options for bulb placement. While the Tizio 50 can take a halogen lamp with a maximum of 50 watts, you can equip the Tizio 35 with a halogen bulb that has a maximum of 35 watts. Now you also know where the respective number in the product name comes from.
By the way, you can easily find out which Tizio luminaire it is: The maximum permitted wattage (35 or 50) is stamped under the luminaire's socket.
Who will repair my Artemide Tizio?
One way to get your Tizio back up to scratch is through one of Artemide's official repair services.
Wouldn't you like to replace electronic components? You can often do this yourself with a little manual skill. Practical push buttons make it easy to replace many components, such as the arms. However, you should be very careful, especially with older Tizio lights, so as not to break anything off during the repair. It is important that when you replace the bulb, you pull it straight out of the socket. This will prevent it from breaking off. If you want to replace or repair electronic components, always contact a qualified electrician.

Can I convert my Artemide Tizio to LED?
Theoretically, a conversion is possible if you use an LED retrofit bulb with a G4 socket for your Tizio with socket. However, the LED light source does not come close to the amount of light that a 35 or 50 watt bulb can provide. In addition, it is possible that the transformer integrated in the base hums, as it is designed for a much higher wattage. If you want to put an LED head on your Tizio with socket, you should consider that in this case you also have to change the transformer in the base. Depending on the model, this may not fit in the base of the light, which means it would need to be replaced as well. So if you want a Tizio with an efficient LED light source, we recommend you buy the Tizio LED.
Basically, you should know: The light quantity of the Tizio LED is lower than that of a halogen lamp with 35 or 50 watts for the Tizio with socket. A halogen lamp with 20 to 25 watts, which is comparable in the amount of light, does not consume much more electricity than the Tizio with LED technology.
So, all in all, a conversion is not worthwhile. However, if you can get by with a smaller amount of light and want to buy a new Tizio anyway, simply order the Artemide Tizio LED.
