Design characteristics of chandeliers
With shade
In chandeliers with shades, the light sources are concealed and not directly visible. These chandeliers usually emit their light downwards or upwards and downwards, which is why they are suitable for lighting the dining or coffee table.
Without shade
In the case of chandeliers without a shade, the light sources are completely exposed and are therefore clearly visible from all sides. This design, although often interpreted in a modern way, is somewhat reminiscent of classic chandeliers with candles.
Chandeliers with different numbers of lights
In most cases, chandeliers have several individually perceptible light sources, for example three, five or even dozens. However, there are also chandeliers that are equipped with only a single light source but have individually perceptible illuminated elements. This, together with the corresponding refraction of light, gives the impression of several light sources.
Control technologies for chandeliers
Dimmable chandeliers with adjustable brightness are recommended to adapt the lighting to your mood. For example, if you want a particularly cosy atmosphere in the living room or bedroom, simply dim the light down to increase the feel-good factor. What size should my chandelier be?
How big your chandelier should be depends on two conditions: firstly, what you want to use it for and secondly, how the room or table is dimensioned. If the chandelier is to be used as room lighting, we recommend that the diameter should be around 20 per cent of the shorter side of the room. In a room measuring 550 x 500 cm, for example, a chandelier with a diameter of 100 cm is a good choice.
To illuminate elongated rooms evenly, one chandelier is often not enough. Instead, you should hang several small chandeliers with a diameter of up to 59 cm in a row.
Important: The amount of light is crucial for good lighting. This depends on various factors, such as the size and proportions of the room, the reflectance of the room's boundary surfaces and furnishings, and the light distribution of the luminaire. Use our table to find the right lumen package for room lighting with chandeliers.
If you want to illuminate your dining or coffee table with a chandelier, the size of the table is more important than the size of the room. Make sure that the table is at least 15 cm longer on each side than the light. This way, the proportions are correct and you avoid bumping into the chandelier when standing up.
Which light sources are recommended for chandeliers?
Which light sources you choose for your chandelier is particularly important if you select a model without a shade, i.e. the light sources are exposed and therefore immediately catch the eye. When selecting the light sources, don't just consider the base that matches the socket, but also pay attention to the coating and shape.
Above dining tables, we recommend chandeliers with shielded light sources that do not allow a direct view of the light source.
Candle-shaped light sources are ideal for classic chandeliers, while bulb lamps with their retro design are particularly trendy. Glow lamps are very popular for chandeliers, which take centre stage in combination with purist chandeliers. General-purpose bulb-shaped lamps, on the other hand, are rarely used in chandeliers, at least when they are exposed and visible from all sides.

At what height should I hang my chandelier?
The correct height for suspending your luster depends on its purpose. If it shall hang above the dining table, the same advice applies as for pendant lights: Leave a clearance of 60 to 70 cm between the luminaire and the table surface.
If you plan to hang your luster freely in the middle of the room, make sure that you can pass under it comfortably without the need to bend down or the risk to hit against it when you raise your arms. The head space should be of at least 230 cm between the lowest part of the chandelier and the floor. But the ideal height for your home depends on the height of the room and the height of the people in your household and can therefore be even higher.
Chandeliers require high ceilings. If we take a minimum head space of 230 cm, we must add at least 50 cm for the height of the lamp itself and another 50 cm for suspension length. All combined, we arrive at a ceiling height of at least 330 cm. Please note that these are minimum values. Depending on the luminaire body, pendant height and desired headroom, the required ceiling height may also be higher.
How do I clean a chandelier?
To ensure that your chandelier always shines beautifully, good care is essential. We recommend regular dry cleaning about once a month and thorough wet cleaning once a year.
Before cleaning your chandelier, you should always switch off the light and turn off the fuse. A lint-free duster or feather duster, preferably made from natural materials such as lambswool, is sufficient for dry cleaning. A long telescopic handle ensures that you can reach everywhere easily and may even save you having to use a ladder.
Be cautious when your chandelier is made from acrylic glass: you should exclusively wet-clean and never dry-clean it, in order to avoid static charging.
A thorough wet cleaning once a year can be part of the traditional “spring cleaning”. An opportune moment, because it is the end of the heating period during which a lot of dust rises with the warm air. Special cleaning sprays for chandeliers are commercially available, which you can choose according to the material of your luster.
Untreated metal surfaces should be cleaned with a special cleaner for metal, brass chandeliers should be treated with a brass care product. For lacquered or sealed metal surfaces, cleaning with water and a little washing-up liquid is sufficient. Glass crystals can be cleaned with glass cleaner.
Also, before starting the thorough cleanup, do not forget to unscrew the fuse. Then, proceed as follows:
- Remove any dust from your chandelier as described above.
- DCover the floor under the luster in order to protect it from dripping off liquids. For example, you can use a foil, newsprint paper or old cloths.
- Spray the luminaire completely with the spray.
- Wipe dry any accumulations of liquid in hollows with a cloth.
- Wait until the lamp has dried completely before you turn the power back on.
