DCWéditions Mantis – iconic designer luminaire for flexibly steerable light
With the Mantis, DCWéditions presents the re-edition of a design classic by Bernard Schottlander from 1951. The black metal lamp exudes industrial charm and is somewhat reminiscent of an acrobat floating in the air.
The Mantis owes this to its ingenious construction: an asymmetrical lampshade merges into a filigree, gently curved arm, which in turn leads to a counterweight mechanism. This allows the shaft to be tilted in several stages.
The lampshade can also be aligned, allowing you to benefit from flexibly directable zone light. You can use this, for example, for reading or for coffee table lighting. In addition to the original design, the floor lamp Mantis BS1, the family includes other floor lamps as well as wall lamps and a table lamp.

Bernard Schottlander – designer for interiors, sculptor for exteriors
Bernard Schottlander (1924 – 1991) was a German-British industrial designer. Born in Mainz, Germany, he came to Leeds, England in 1939. There he worked as a welder and plater and attended courses in sculpture. He later studied industrial design in London. Schottlander liked to describe himself as a designer for interiors and a sculptor for exteriors.
He was a great admirer of Alexander Calder, a U.S. sculptor who is considered the inventor of the mobile. Calder was known for his delicate, mobile sculptures. Bernard Schottlander was inspired by these and created the flexibly adjustable Mantis lamp.
