Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo, Spain, in 1961. Even as a child, she had a penchant for taking objects apart and then reassembling them. At the age of 18, the Spaniard decided to become an architect. Consequently, she studied architecture and design in Madrid and Milan. In the Italian fashion metropolis, she attended a course taught by Achille Castiglioni, where she finally fell in love with design.
In 2001 Patricia Urquiola founded a studio for industrial and product design as well as architecture together with Alberto Zontone, her husband. The list of clients is long. Among others, the designer has already worked for B&B Italia, Alessi and Louis Vuitton – and of course for Flos.
In addition to Almendra, she has also designed Tatou and Chasen for the Italian lighting manufacturer. The Tatou lamps were originally inspired by ancient samurai armor and, with their perforated lampshade, are reminiscent of the armor of an armadillo (French tatou). Due to the double lampshade you benefit from well glare-free light.
With Chasen, Patricia Urquiola has created a pendant lamp whose lamellae shade can be compressed as well as extended. So you influence the light effect of the lamp as well as its design.
