Room lighting ensures a uniform basic brightness throughout the kitchen and equalises strong differences in brightness. Zone lighting, on the other hand, illuminates the areas where people work or eat, such as the kitchen island, worktop or dining table, directly and without glare, while mood lighting, for example for the window sill, helps to create a cosy atmosphere.

Room lighting for the kitchen
Room lighting serves as basic lighting in the kitchen. It not only ensures good orientation, but also prevents unpleasant contrasts between light and dark, which can be stressful for the eyes. Balanced room lighting promotes a general sense of well-being.
Tip: We recommend dimmable room lighting, especially if you often use the kitchen as a cosy place for social gatherings. This will create a cosy atmosphere.

How do I light a kitchen without wall units?
If your kitchen does not have wall units, ceiling spotlights mounted centrally above the worktop are a good option. This directs the light onto the desired area.
An alternative option for kitchen lighting without wall cabinets are adjustable wall lights. If there is no power outlet, you can use a wall light with a plug. Pendant or ceiling lamps with a long arm also provide effective zone lighting in the kitchen.
Battery-powered lights with magnetic attachment are particularly uncomplicated, as they are easy to attach and do not require a cable.
How many lumens are recommended for kitchen lighting?
The number of lumens required for your kitchen lighting depends on various factors, such as the brightness of the room, the type of lighting and other aspects. You can find detailed information on this in our table.
In the kitchen, angled layouts or several wall units can present lighting challenges. Pure ambient lighting is not sufficient here and should definitely be supplemented by targeted zone lighting If you want to illuminate your dining table, worktop or kitchen island, we recommend around 700 lumens per square metre of the area to be illuminated. This will ensure sufficient bright light and create an optimum lighting situation.
What distance should spotlights have in the kitchen?
The recommended distances between the individual kitchen spotlights depend on whether they are used as room or zone lighting. For single-flame spots for ambient lighting, the optimum distance is around 90 to 100 cm. A distance of 120 to 150 cm is recommended for double-flame spots. Single-lamp spotlights with zone lighting for illuminating work surfaces such as kitchen islands should be positioned 60 to 80 cm apart, while double-lamp kitchen spotlights should be placed 80 to 100 cm apart.
In rooms without wall units, the light is mounted in the centre of the surface. In kitchens with wall units, the light should be positioned approximately 60 to 80 cm from the furniture. Make sure that the light does not fall from behind when you are preparing meals. Swivelling kitchen spotlights are recommended to direct the light onto the work surface.
In addition to the distance, the positioning of the spotlights is also crucial. When preparing meals, the light should fall directly onto the work surface without casting unwanted shadows.
At what height should my pendant light hang above the cooking island?
As a rule of thumb, the pendant light above your kitchen island should be positioned as high as possible to avoid glare. As you are usually standing and not sitting in this area, it is important that the light is not placed at eye level. The optimum distance varies depending on the type of light and the size of the island, but should be between 80 and 120 cm. Height-adjustable pendant lights are particularly practical, as you can adjust the pendant flexibly.
If you want to illuminate your kitchen counter, we recommend a distance of 60 to 70 cm between the pendant light and the counter, similar to a dining table. Slimmer or linear kitchen lamps are generally preferable, as kitchen counters are usually narrower than dining tables.
