Design

The high-quality reflector of the PH 4½-4 glass pendant light from the Danish manufacturer Louis Poulsen consists of hand-blown opal glass in three layers. The outside surfaces are shiny, the inside surfaces are satin-finished. Just like the classic PH5, the three glass lampshades are arranged around the illuminant according to the principle of a logarithmic spiral. In this way, it is almost impossible to look directly into the illuminant. For this sophisticated design, the Louis Poulsen PH 4½-4 glass pendant light was awarded with the iF Design Award in 1982.

The PH 4½-4 glass was designed by Poul Henningsen, one of the most influential Danish designers of modern times. He created the pendant light as part of a series with triple lampshades that comprises a total of 19 models. The name is based on the combination of two shade segments. The first number describes its diameter of 45 cm, while the second number indicates to the model PH 4/4.

PH 4½-4 glass pendant light – diffuse downward-directed light

The PH 4½-4 glass emits soft light which escapes as diffuse ambient light to the sides as well as directly downwards in the form of glare-free, focused zone light. Thanks to the light bulb being completely shielded, it is impossible to get dazzled by looking at the PH 4½-4. Fitted with an E27 socket, the pendant light by Louis Poulsen can be equipped with a variety of suitable illuminants. Halogen lamps stand out for an excellent colour rendering and particularly warm-white light. Whereas other lamps, such as fluorescent lamps or LED retrofit lamps, score points by a high energy-efficiency. Equipped with one of the latter, the PH 4½-4 glass pendant light becomes a real energy-saver, which benefits your wallet as well as the environment.
