How can I recognize a high-quality glass?
Double-walled or double-layered glasses are an essential quality feature. The mouth-blown glasses go through an elaborate manufacturing process and ensure a first-class, uniform light image.
Murano glass is considered to be of particularly high quality. This rating is only given to glasses that are manufactured on the Italian island of Murano. However, since production costs there have risen sharply in the past, fewer and fewer companies are producing on the island in Venice.
However, many of our manufacturers continue to produce their glass lamps using the same manufacturing principle, often in surrounding glass blowing factories, for example in Venice. The quality of the glass is comparable to that of Murano glass.
How are glass lamps made?
Basically, a distinction is made between machine production, in which the glass is pressed, spun or blown, and handmade mouth-blown glass. Here, liquid glass is placed in a mold and then blown into shape by mouth. This is usually done through a long, thin tube. If the glass body is later to have a special design, for example a grooved surface, a patterned mold is used.
Since less pressure is exerted during hand production than during machine production, tiny air inclusions, also known as air bubbles, occur. They are considered a quality feature of glass lamps and make each product unique.
Colored glass is either painted afterwards or the color is added to the liquid glass mass. In this case, the glass is colored through.
Which illuminant is suitable for a glass luminaire?
In order to benefit from optimal light quality and avoid shadows forming on the glass surface, you should choose a suitable light source for your glass lamp.
If it is tinted or colored glass shades, clear filament LEDs are a very good idea for beautiful effects. For opal glass, we advise you to use frosted or opal bulbs to reduce glare. Have you chosen a luminaire with opaque glass lampshade? Then the coating of the light source does not play a major role.
Good to know: If you buy a glass lamp with a socket from us, you will automatically receive recommendations for a suitable bulb.
How do I clean glass lamps?
Glass lamps can usually be cleaned like ordinary glass surfaces with water and mild detergent. Do not use aggressive chemical cleaners and dry the surface well afterwards.
If your lamp is connected to the mains, turn off the fuse for your own safety before cleaning the glass lamp.
