Mid-century style uniquely combines the rigor of geometry with the softness of flowing forms. The design style describes furniture and product designs in the middle of the 20th century. The term Mid-Century was coined by journalist and author, Cara Greenberg in her 1983 book, Mid-Century Modern. She focused on furniture from the 1950s. In the meantime, the term is used more broadly and refers to architecture as well as furniture and product designs from the 1930s to the 1960s.
Characteristic of Mid-Century style lamps are functional, no-frills designs where, as with Bauhaus style, form follows function. Unlike the Bauhaus style, which influenced the Mid-Century style, but here are mainly not only geometric designs, but also flowing, organic shapes. In terms of color, many earth tones are used, occasionally paired with bright primary colors. Materials used are both natural wood, natural stone and marble, as well as various metals and, at the time, new types of plastics.
