Midgard looks back on a history of more than 100 years: The company was founded in 1919 by Curt Fischer in Auma, Thuringia. The engineer and designer is still considered the inventor of steerable light today. With his famous "steering lamps", which were a real innovation at the time, he supplied the Bauhaus, among others.
Since 2015, the company has been owned by David Einsiedler and Joke Rasch, who took over the company from the third generation of the Fischer family. Since then, Midgard has been producing in Hamburg, where it has once again been manufacturing the K831, Ayno, Federzug and Modular luminaires since 2017. Production is based on the original manufacturing methods and with the help of the original tools. Missing tools are reproduced by Midgard on the basis of original drawings.
Midgard luminaires are distinguished by their first-class workmanship and durable quality. Functional as ever, they inspire with their flexible adjustability and remind with their timeless, reduced design of the legendary Bauhaus era.
Ayno - maximum flexibility in light control
Ayno appeared in 2020 and is thus the first design of a new lamp from Midgard since the 1950s. With it, industrial designer Stefan Diez literally succeeded in spanning the arc between the origin and the present of directable light.
Move the two rings on the lamp stem to adjust the height of the lamp. To direct the light even more precisely, the shade can be aligned. While the floor lamp makes a good decentralized dining or coffee table lighting, you provide with the table lamp for reading light at your desk.
The design lamp is made of largely recyclable materials and can be repaired without the need for tools. No wonder, then, that Ayno received the German Sustainability Award 2020. In 2022, the Ayno luminaire family also received the Federal Ecodesign Award, the highest state prize for sustainable design.
K831 - adjustable pendant lights with industrial flair
The re-edition of the K831 is based on a design from the 1930s. With this luminaire, Midgard proves that the light can also be directed in a targeted manner in hanging lamps. For this purpose, the formally reduced K831 features a swiveling shade.
The single-flame pendant lamp is also available from us as an exclusive special edition in modern pastel colors. You can use it to illuminate small couch or kitchen tables. For somewhat larger tables, the two-flame pendant lamp is recommended. Long dining tables or kitchen counters are bathed in glare-free light with the three-lamp version.

The Midgard history - turbulent and rich in tradition
The history of Midgard goes back to the year 1919. At that time, the engineer Curt Fischer took over the industrial plant Auma, which until then manufactured machines for the production of industrial porcelain. He reoriented the company and concentrated on the production and sale of lamps for the working world. These were so-called "steering lamps" - a novelty at the time.
As early as 1919, Fischer received a patent for his revolutionary wall lamp with scissor arm, which he developed out of necessity. He wanted to prevent his employees from shading the workpieces with their bodies, which always happened with the static ceiling light common at the time. Many other designs followed, with which he supplied the Bauhaus, among others. Its founder, Walter Gropius, was fascinated by the articulated lamps and used them himself at work as well as at home. Other well-known designers such as Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Marianne Brandt and Gunta Stölzl also took a great liking to the machine lamps.
When Curt Fischer died in 1956, his son Wolfgang Fischer took over the company. In 1972, the company was expropriated and restructured. Although the company continued to produce luminaires, it did so at great savings in the quality of materials and workmanship. At this time, a product was also created that became an international success: the spring-loaded luminaire for IKEA. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the company was reprivatized. The cooperation with IKEA was terminated because of too high production costs, the material and workmanship quality increased again.
During his time at the helm of the company, Wolfang Fischer always acted thoughtfully and with foresight. For example, he regularly had patents renewed or extended, especially during the difficult times for the company in the 1970s and 1980s. Finally, in the 1990s, he returned to the designs of his father in the manufacture of machine luminaires. After he passed on the management of the company to his stepdaughter Anja Specht, she continued to run the business together with her sister Susi Reifenstahl.
In 2015, there was a big break when David Einsiedler and Joke Rasch took over the company and moved it along with production to Hamburg. There, Midgard now once again manufactures the K831, Ayno, Federzug and Modular luminaires using original tools.
