"Designers are translators. Our job is to track down social concerns and things that are being discussed in society and translate them into a product or service."Stefan Diez, designer of Ayno
Midgard Ayno – sustainable, innovative and flexible
Industrial designer Stefan Diez faced a major challenge when designing the Ayno 2020: the first Midgard luminaire since the 1950s was to build on the high technical standards of previous lamps. At the same time, it was to be based on novel manufacturing techniques and recyclable materials. The result is an innovative luminaire that has won awards for its sustainable design.
The core element of the Ayno is the thin, flexible fiberglass rod. It is stretched into an arc by means of a cable and can be flexibly adjusted by two adjustment rings. Since the conical shade can also be aligned, you can direct the infinitely dimmable light of the Ayno particularly flexible.
The family floor lamp is very suitable as decentralized lighting for your dining or coffee table. With the table lamp you provide good light for reading or working. As a space-saving reading lamp, the Ayno wall lamp is recommended above the bed, desk or couch. You always benefit from brilliant color rendering, which makes the colors of illuminated objects appear particularly natural in the light.
Award-winning design
The Ayno has won two major awards for its sustainable design: the German Sustainability Award 2020 and the Federal Ecodesign Award 2022, the highest state prize for sustainable design.
Several aspects convinced the juries at once. For example, Ayno is one of the first LED luminaires whose electronic components can be repaired and replaced without tools. The other components of the Midgard lamp can also be disassembled into their individual parts and separated by type thanks to recyclable materials.
In addition to its dismantlability and convenient maintenance, the lamp scored points for its contemporary form and function.
Special features of the Ayno
Replaceable LEDs and transformer
Both the integrated LEDs and the transformer of the Midgard luminaire can be replaced. Thanks to DC connectors, even non-professionals can easily make the change without a screwdriver. This increases the service life of the Ayno and makes it a sustainable lighting solution.
Flexible adjustment options
The clever design allows the Ayno to be flexibly adjusted – without any joints at all. To adjust the flexible fiberglass rod, simply move the adjustment rings between which the cable is stretched. This allows you to change the radius and height. In addition, the shade can be swiveled to direct the light even more precisely.
Stefan Diez – an industrial designer with innovative ideas and sustainable solutions
Stefan Diez (born 1971) is a German industrial designer who studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. A trained carpenter, he worked as an assistant to Richard Sapper and Konstantin Grcic before opening his own studio in Munich in 2002. There he has since designed furniture, lighting and accessories for renowned manufacturers.
Diez develops innovative products under ecological and social aspects. His designs are contemporary solutions that combine form, function and sustainability. He has won many prestigious awards for his work, and in 2022 he was named Designer of the Year by the architecture and design magazine AW.
When Midgard approached the industrial designer for a collaboration, he was immediately interested. Diez gladly accepted the challenge of a new design and developed the successful product Ayno in close cooperation with the Midgard team.
