"To be truly contemporary, you must always have a hand in the past and a hand in the future."Vico Magistretti, designer of Atollo
Oluce Atollo – iconic table lamp for a unique lighting ambience
When Vico Magistretti designed the Olcue Atollo in 1977, he had no idea that his lamp would become the epitome of the table lamp. For his design, the designer experimented with three geometric bodies: cylinder, cone and hemisphere. The cylinder forms the base of the lamp, which is connected to the hemispherical shade by a cone. This simple yet refined design is reminiscent of a mushroom and is now considered the archetype of the table lamp.
The light falls down through the hemisphere and illuminates not only the area around the lamp, but also makes the cone and cylinder shine brightly. The Atollo table lamp from Oluce turns into an enchanting island of light on the bedside table or sideboard. The large version of the lamp also creates an atmospheric light ambience from the floor. Some of the lights are also dimmable.
We offer the Atollo table lamp by Oluce in several sizes and colors, as well as metal or mouth-blown Murano glass.
Vico Magistretti was one of the most influential Italian architects and industrial designers of the post-war period. The Italian was born in Milan in 1920 and later studied there at the Polytechnic. After that he worked as an architect, rather in the 60s he devoted himself to industrial design. He designed interiors, furniture and lighting, including Atollo for the manufacturer Oluce, which would become one of his most famous works.
His objects are often characterized by geometric shapes. Exemplary of this is Atollo, for which Vico Magistretti received the Compasso d'Oro. Other lamps he designed for Oluce are the pendant lamps Sonora and Lyndon.
The Italian gained notoriety for his experimental, yet always harmonious designs. Many of his products are still in production. Some of his works, such as the table lamp Atollo, can be found in MoMA, New York.
