Pendant lights for the dining table – the ideal lighting solution for your needs
Pendant lights are a classic dining room design feature, and rightly so: they let you focus the light on the dining area and offer a pleasant level of light. This creates an inviting environment when sitting together with friends or family.
Deciding which hanging lamp is right for you can depend on various factors. The size and shape of your dining room table play an important role. Your interior style and preferences for certain colours or materials are also key. On top of that, specific requirements such as an adjustable height, whether it should be dimmable, or the position of the ceiling wiring can also influence your decision.
At light11, you can find a wide range of light fittings for your dining room to satisfy the most varied requirements. We’ll help you find the ideal light for your dining table or kitchen table.

Pendant lights that go with different interior styles
At light11, you can find hanging lamps for rooms with different styles of decor. Discover light fittings that go perfectly with a modern interior style and lamps that radiate the raw charm of the industrial style. You can also find lights with a nostalgic vintage look, a comfortable country house style, or designs with a pure retro feeling.
Many of our hanging lamps for the dining room come with integrated LEDs. Thanks to their extremely compact construction, LEDs allow us to create innovative new designs, such as very narrow or flat lamp heads. The targeted light produced by LEDs also gives LED pendant lights an astonishing light quality level. They also have the advantage of being extremely energy efficient and having a very long lifespan.
For atmospheric lighting at mealtimes, we recommend LED pendant lights with a warm white colour temperature between 2,700 and 3,000 K. It is an individual question of preference how bright the light should be. As a rough guide, you should have 700 lm or higher per square metre of table surface.
The colour rendering is also important: the Ra value gives you information about this. The higher the Ra value, the more authentic the lighting is and therefore the more natural and resplendent colours will appear. This is not to be underestimated – you eat with your eyes first! A value of at least 90 is very good and 95 or more is excellent.
As well as classic lightbulbs and halogen bulbs, many LED hanging lights are also dimmable now. This means you can reduce the brightness of the light and create a cosier atmosphere. Depending on the light, it can either be dimmed in steps or seamlessly, usually by means of an (integrated) switch or touch dimmer. Particularly innovative designs also include gesture control or dimming via an app.
Some of our lights also include a handy dim-to-warm function: here the light doesn’t just get darker when you dim it, but also warmer – as if it were a classic lightbulb.
If your dining table or kitchen table is not placed right under the ceiling wiring, decentralised pendant lights can offer a good solution. They can have, for example, an extra wide radius or movable arms to direct the light wherever you want. Multi-pendant fittings with several long pendants that can be attached to the ceiling using fastening loops are also an option here.
In rooms with very high ceilings, as you would find in older buildings, galleries, or lofts, it is important that the lights don’t hang too high over your dining table or kitchen table. That’s why hanging lamps with particularly long cables are in demand. In order to calculate the required cable length for the light, take around 1.4m off the ceiling heigh
Frequently asked questions for our lighting experts

Anja Schuh
1. Which pendant lights are suitable for the dining table?
For optimum lighting during meals, it is important that the luminaire emits its light downwards without glare. An uneven number of lights is considered particularly harmonious. Pendant luminaires with 1, 3 or 5 lights are particularly suitable. You should always make sure that the table is at least 30 cm wider than the luminaire. This ensures that the proportions are correct and you avoid bumping into the body of the light when standing up.
2. How high should the pendant light hang above the dining table?
To ensure that you have a clear view of the person sitting opposite you and benefit from glare-free lighting, we recommend a distance of 60 to 70 cm between the table surface and the light. To achieve this distance, it may be necessary to shorten the cable. Height-adjustable lamps that can be flexibly adjusted are even more convenient.
