How many lumens should an outdoor wall light have?
The number of lumens your outdoor wall light should have depends on the intended use. If you want a light to help you find your way around the house, around 400 lumens is sufficient. For good, safe lighting along the house wall, 400 to 800 lumens are better. For particularly good visibility in the dark, we recommend outdoor wall lights with more than 800 lumens.
Good to know: the above values relate in particular to outdoor wall luminaires with light directed downwards as well as up and down. For models with diffuse light in all directions and an opal or transparent glass shade, a lower lumen value of max. 300 lumens is recommended to avoid strong glare.
At what height should I install my exterior wall light?
You should mount exterior wall lamps for front door lighting at about eye level. In practice, a height between 160 and 180 cm has proven to be ideal for wall lights and corner lamps. Would you like to illuminate the terrace? Then we recommend that you install the light a little lower so that you are not dazzled when sitting or standing.
Tip: when choosing the appropriate height, be sure to also consider the architecture of the house. Match the position of your outdoor wall lights to doors, windows and other building elements to create a harmonious overall look.
What are the advantages of outdoor wall lights with motion sensors?
Outdoor wall lights with motion sensors are particularly useful at the entrance to your house. They automatically switch on when someone approaches, offering you a number of advantages.
Firstly, you minimise the risk of tripping and secondly, you save yourself the search for the light switch and don't need to have a hand free to find it. In addition, outdoor wall lights with motion sensors reduce the risk of burglary, as the sudden lighting is more likely to scare strangers away from your property. Because the light only comes on when it is needed, you reduce energy costs, which also has a positive impact on the environment.
If the outdoor wall light also has a twilight switch, the light only comes on when a certain illuminance, measured in lux, is not reached. This value can be individually adjusted on some products.
What protection class is recommended for outdoor wall lights?
The IP protection rating is an important criterion when choosing your outdoor lighting and is made up of two digits. The first digit provides information about the protection against contact and foreign bodies (e.g. insects), while the second digit indicates the protection against water of the luminaire. The higher the respective digit, the better the protection.
In most cases, protection rating IPX4 is sufficient for outdoor wall lights. This is because the lights are splash-proof. If rain cannot have much of an effect on the outdoor light, for example under covered house entrances, terraces or balconies, spray water protection is sufficient. Luminaires with a protection rating of IPX3 have this. If you are planning to install your outdoor wall light in an unprotected location, we recommend a higher protection rating such as IP65. In this case, the product is protected against water jets and is also dustproof.
What are external wall lights with uplight, downlight or uplight and downlight for?
External wall luminaires with uplight, downlight and uplight/downlight provide glare-free light if mounted at the right height. The direction of light you should choose depends on the application:
- External wall luminaires with uplight create very striking visual effects. However, they are less suitable as orientation light.
- Exterior wall luminaires with downlights impressively showcase the house façade, provided they are mounted high up – just below the roof. Mounted at eye level, they provide good orientation light on paths.
- Exterior wall luminaires with uplights and downlights illuminate your façade in both directions. They showcase the architecture of the house and provide good orientation lighting.
