You can do this with solar lights, which draw their power directly from the sun, or with rechargeable battery lights, which you simply charge using a mains plug. How do motion detectors work with outdoor lights?

So-called passive infrared sensors (PIR sensors) are generally used for outdoor lamps with motion detectors. They detect moving heat sources. The light switches on when people, animals or even warm car engines approach, for example. However, the PIR sensors do not react to static heat sources, such as sunlight.

Important: To optimise the detection of heat sources, there should be no obstacles between the sensors and the moving object. This means that you should not install your lamp with motion detector in a concealed or shielded position.

Where do I install outdoor lights with motion detectors?

In principle, outdoor lamps with motion sensors are advisable wherever you only need light for a short time, for example at the entrance to the house, at driveways, on paths or in garages.

Wall lights, for example, are ideal at the house entrance. Entrances with large roofs can also be illuminated with a ceiling light with motion detector.

For your driveway, we recommend spotlights for outside that you attach to the house façade. Alternatively, bollard lights with motion detectors are an option. These are also ideal for illuminating garden paths. This allows you and your guests to get safely through the garden after dark if the barbecue party goes on into the dark evening hours.

Sensor outdoor lights are also very practical in garages or under carports, as you can expect bright light when you enter or drive through without having to fumble for the light switch. Wall or ceiling lights with motion detectors are a particularly good idea here.

What criteria are particularly important for outdoor lights with motion sensors?

Important features of sensor outdoor lights are the light duration, the detection range and the detection angle. These can be individually adjusted for some products. How long the light should burn depends heavily on the application situation and personal requirements. If the light duration can be adjusted, simply try out different values. In general, approx. 1 to 3 minutes is recommended.

In most cases, the detection range is several metres. Here too, the optimum value depends on the size or length of the outdoor area to be illuminated. It is important to ensure that steps or uneven surfaces in particular are fully covered by the light.

The correct angle of coverage depends on where the outdoor lamp is located. At the entrance to a house, 90 degrees is often sufficient for wall lamps. To illuminate a driveway or path, 120 to 180 degrees are more suitable.

In some situations, such as when you are unloading the car, it is annoying if the light regularly goes out by itself. In such cases, we recommend retrofitting a multifunction switch such as the Arnold switch. This allows you to conveniently switch between several modes and switch from the automatic mode of the sensor to continuous light and back again.

How does an outdoor sensor light with twilight switch work?

In the case of outdoor lights with motion detectors that have a twilight switch, the light only starts to illuminate when the illuminance falls below a certain level (measured in lux). This value can be set individually for many products.

The twilight switch has the task of confirming the set illuminance with a switching contact. For this purpose, the light integrates a light sensor that keeps the switching contact to the twilight switch open when the ambient brightness is sufficient so that the light does not switch on. If the light falls below the set value, the light sensor switches the contact, which activates the light.

The advantage of twilight switches is obvious: as the motion sensor only reacts when someone approaches and the light level falls below the set value, the light only shines when you really need it. This saves electricity, money and protects the environment.
